PE foam refers to foams made from polyethylene. Typically it is made from expanded pellets made with use of a blowing agent, followed by expansion into a mold in a steam chest – the process is similar to that used to make expanded polystyrene foam
Polyethylene foam is a durable, lightweight, resilient, closed-cell material. It is often used for packaging fragile goods due to its excellent vibration dampening and insulation properties. It also offers high resistance to chemicals and moisture
Polyethylene, being the closed cell foam that it is, makes for a foam with a very low water absorption. This means that unlike polyurethane, it can be wiped clean with a wet rag or towel with minimal absorption
This material is combustible and therefore should be properly used or installed. During shipment, storage, installation and use this material should not be exposed to flame or other ignition sources.
Polyethylene foam is excellent for insulating objects. Its flexibility allows for it to bend and insulate at the same time. Straight or flexible pipe insulation is a great example of PE insulating a product
Polyethylene is melted until molten, then mixed with a kind of halogenated hydrocarbon which serves as a foaming agent. The mixing is conducted under high pressure, and then fed into a controlled, heated screw extruder, and forced out a die opening
